I usually leave the original where it is but rename it to bootanimation.old then paste the new one in there. I just copy the bootanimation.zip to /system/media over top of the default one using root explorer. I've attempted to use these in lieu of Sprint's boot animations. I also increased the resolution of the original images slightly. I simply modified it to be 1080 1920 with a 20 fps rate.
